The Stellenbosch Winelands are located in the Western Cape in South Africa, and have a long and rich history of wine production, dating back to the 17th century. The area is home to some of the country’s oldest and most well-known wineries, and is known for its beautiful rolling vineyards, mountain views and Mediterranean climate. The region is thought to have been the first place in South Africa to produce wine, with the first vineyard planted in 1682. This early wine production was undertaken by Dutch settlers, and the first recorded harvest was in 1699. The area was quickly established as a place for winemaking, with several small wineries being established in the late 18th century. These wineries produced a variety of wines, including white, red and fortified wines, and the wines quickly gained a reputation for their quality. The area continued to expand and develop throughout the 19th century, and in the early 20th century the region had become firmly established as one of South Africa’s premier wine-producing regions. In 1921, Stellenbosch was declared a wine-growing district and this designation has never been revoked. Since then, the Stellenbosch Winelands have become known for their high-quality wines, and the region is now home to more than 140 wineries, each producing a variety of styles. Many of the wineries offer tours and tastings, and some of the larger ones also offer cycling tours, allowing visitors to explore the vineyards on two wheels. Cycling in the Stellenbosch Winelands is a popular pastime and the area has a well-developed network of cycling trails. These trails range from easy and beginner-friendly to more challenging routes, and provide a great way to explore the area and take in the stunning views.
